This article informs readers about a ceremonial exchange system in Melanesia known as kula. Kula can be viewed in a number of ways: as a system of social communication, a competition for prestige or a system for re-circulating material goods. The article focuses on two differing interpretations of kula, from Bronislaw Malinowski and Reo Fortune. |
