Borders and the Phenomenon of Walls in a Cultural-Geographic Context / Terezie Kubínová / Supervisor: Jan D. Bláha / Diploma Thesis / 2024 / Thesis in Process
Abstract:: The main aim of this thesis is to demonstrate the crucial role of territoriality and borders in a cultural-geographical context by using the phenomenon of walls as an example. Borders are reflected in regionalisation, i.e. in the methodology of regional geography, as well as in political and cultural geography. The main focus of the thesis will be to identify actual physical and non-physical walls/barriers in the world, both anthropogenic and natural “walls”. The data collected will be further categorized according to a typology that will be created for the purpose of the thesis, and then displayed on a map. In this context, regional- or global-social and cultural impacts, stability and other relevant characteristics of the boundaries will be observed. In the next part, borders and their characteristics will be visualized on a world map and the results will be compared with different concepts of global regionalization, such as Huntington’s theory. This part of the thesis will also compare the relevance of the older “walls”, including whether they still have the same function or not. The thesis will include GIS methods, comparative and media analysis. What are the main geographical causes of the non/stability of walls and borders in the world? What are the possible geographical scenarios for the future of un/stable borders and walls? Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
Usability of the database of objects in relation to the (macro)regionalization of the world / Martin Roub / Supervisor: Jan D. Bláha / Diploma Thesis / 2023 / Thesis in Process
The Spatial Configuration of Families and its Evolution against the Background of Liquid Modernity i / Pavel Mlýnek / Supervisor: Jan D. Bláha / PhD Thesis / 2022 / Thesis in Process
Abstract:: The thesis examines the issue of the change of spatial distribution of family members in the contextof the evolution of modern society. It aims to define the relations between types of communities and spatial development at the lowest social level – individuals and families. In this context, it identifies the similarities and differences of the types of communities at the same hierarchical level, with an emphasis on three specific categories. They can be identified as a loss of the need for ties to a particular place, a change in the general concept of the family within a society, and the general resilience of cultures arising from the value foundations of individuals. Other outcomes are expectedto include unification of methodological approaches to balance factors of identity-cartographic relevance-time, a tool to monitor changes in spatial configuration, including preference for post-marital residences, and prediction of the location of further family members.
A lost heritage and its interpretation – The future of our pasts / Veronika Kupková / Supervisor: Jan D. Bláha / PhD Thesis / 2021 / Thesis in Process
Abstract:: The Future of Our Pasts: Engaging “Invisible”/Lost Cultural Heritage - Přísečnice study case. The aim of the research is to explore various socio-cultural aspects in relation to (preserving) ‘lost’ cultural heritage and to find out effective tools that might help to preserve it. The role of ‘invisible’ cultural heritage will be examined in comparison to tangible heritage (UNESCO Krušnohoří), as well as in relation to the regional identity and memory. The focus area (Pressnitz) has been affected by multiple migration and forced displacement, therefore the study has to deal with various perspectives and contexts. Together with the last witnesses, the “memory of the place” will be captured and restored (modern technologies). Moreover, suitable educational activities that may help to preserve the ‘lost’ cultural heritage will be suggested. Lastly, the study will try to prove to what extent the example of Pressnitz (interpretation of its cultural heritage) might be transferred to other “non-existing” places in the region and/or abroad.

Fluid regionalization in a multi-layered Europe / Martin Bartůněk / Supervisor: Jan D. Bláha / PhD Thesis / 2021 / Thesis in Process
Abstract:: Adopting key concepts of the New Regional Geography, the aim of this project is to expand possibilities of visual presentation of fluid regionalization with geographical names in a multi-layered landscape of Europe. Regionalization debate gains increasing importance in individual states across the world because it implies distinct geopolitical and socio-cultural impacts. This is given by contrasting phenomena of the postmodern world, namely globalization and increasing role of local actors. The project highlights dynamics of regions, and explores geographical names and their transformation through time in the geographical area to understand changing regional identities; thus denoting fluid regionalization. The perception of regions and their dynamics is approached by analysing the documents of various origin and by mental mapping of multi-layer identity of actors and residents of different generations. After then, visuals (maps) of fuzzy regions are derived from Public Participation GIS and spatial statistics in GIS in the regional case studies within Europe, where the focus is on subjective meanings of actors and residents about regional organization of their place.

Spatial diffusion of family members in different cultures / Pavel Mlýnek / Supervisor: Jan D. Bláha / Diploma Thesis / 2022 / Complete Thesis
Abstract:: The paper describes one of the possible approaches to linking genealogical and geographical datasets. The aim of this paper is therefore to develop a procedure for transforming genealogical data and implementing it in space in an ArcGIS environment, then to analyse the pattern of changes in family behaviour over space and time, and to compare the results with each other using the examples of ethnographically distinct data samples from settlements in Papua New Guinea and Central Europe. In the analyses, there are observed issues of positive correlation between increasing generational and alternative spatial distance and socio-political factors conditioning migration in different cultures. The paper presents a generalized concept of attribute table layout that contains information about the typology of family relationships that are otherwise typical for relational databases. Subsequently, a set of tools is assembled to create sub-processes for generating spatial matrices of family members and to design visual analyses within cartographic and infographic outputs.

Geographical aspects of the linguistic landscape and possibilities of its visual presentation / Martin Bartůněk / Supervisor: Jan D. Bláha / Diploma Thesis / 2021 / Complete Thesis
Abstract:: This thesis is focused on the concept of linguistic landscape with emphasis on the geographical aspect and visual presentation of geographical names on the example of the Ústí Region. The main goal of the research is to determine the territorial identity of the inhabitants and then to create a visualization of linguistic landscapes, which can then be used in promotional or didactic materials within the region. To achieve the regionalization of the Ústí Region, a questionnaire survey and participatory mapping with 231 respondents were used. The result is regionalization containing 14 subregions. To achieve the goal of visual presentation of geographical names, the results of a questionnaire survey in the form of perceived symbols for the territories were also used. On this basis, visuals were then created at various scale levels that can strengthen the regional identity or development of the region.

Visuals in geography textbooks and their influence on the emergence of misconceptions / Petr Trahorsch / Supervisor: Jan D. Bláha / PhD Thesis / 2020 / Complete Thesis
Abstract:: Aims of this dissertation work are two levels. The first aim of the thesis is to analyse the structure of visualization and then evaluate the quality of selected visuals; furthermore, the aim of the thesis is to identify high-quality and low-quality visuals in geography textbooks in textbooks for primary and lower secondary education. The second level of aims is related to the user assessment of the visuals. The aim of the work is to identify the influence of different quality visuals on the children´s conception, respectively on the emergence of misconceptions at elementary school pupils. The analysis of the position of visuals in geography textbooks consisted of a quantitative content analysis of the manifest content of visuals (categorization according to pre-determined criteria). The criteria of analysis were the type of visuals, the presence of the title, the thematic focus and use of colour. The quality of visuals was evaluated using a scaling method according to predetermined evaluation criteria (e.g. relation to text, clarity, adequacy, expertise, etc.) based on the usability concept. Before the evaluation, a questionnaire was distributed to 18 experts; they were asked to comment on the importance of each criterion using a pair comparison method. These results were counted in the usability coefficient (uc), which expresses the usability of the given visual. A total of 90 visuals were evaluated. The results of the analysis showed that the photography has a key position in geography textbooks. On the contrary, the share of abstract and quantitative visuals is relatively low. The quality of visualization is primarily related to the publishing house tradi-tion and the level of education; in textbooks from older publishing houses, and in textbooks for older learners, visuals achieve higher quality (usability). There were no statis-tically significant differences between the observed types of visuals. The user assessment of the visuals in relation to the changes in the children´s conceptions was realized by didactic tests (geomorphology and hydrology tests). The research sample consisted of 434 respondents who completed tests without visuals and subsequently tests with high-quality and low-quality visuals. The results showed that rather than the complex concept of visualization quality (usability coefficient), the elements of the visuals (e.g. legend, placement of description, colour solution, print quality, etc.) have an influence on the character of the children´s conceptions and emergence of misconceptions.

Influence of undergraduate specialization on student´s map skill level / Lukáš Macek / Supervisor: Jan D. Bláha / Bachelor's Thesis / 2019 / Complete Thesis
Abstract:: This study aims to explore the impact of various factors on the level of map skills of undergraduate students. The examined factors are the type of university programme (academic focus), attendance of a specific university, gender and extracurricular activities including maps, such as orienteering and hiking. As a tool for collecting data it uses didactic testing, as a tool for comparing and analyzing data it uses statistical tests. As suggested by the title of the thesis, the expected dominant factor affecting map skills is the type of the university programme. The hypothesis is that students of geography-related areas excel in map skills due to the fact that they have identified their interest and talent of using maps in pre-university stages of education and this motivated them to chose a map-related academical degree, such as geography.

Abstract:: The goal of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate the rate and extent of regional identity of pupils from the elementary school in Úštěk by using of mental maps and to attempt to determine factors (age, adress…), which have an influence for the pupil´s regional identity. The thesis also evaluates school educational programmes and textbooks used on the stated school in the relation to regional identity. In the next part there is an aggregated preferential map of pupils from the elementary school made out. The research was made by the use of questionnaires, in which pupils should plot their visions about Úštěk region. The result was, that pupils were aware of certain difference of their region. The only factor, which has an influence to the resulting form of the identity, is the pupil´s age. School educational programmes and textbooks focus on the past and on region´s landscape character. They don´t form the identity to the region via current habits and traditions. The final aggregated preferential maps indicate positive and negative evaluated space in Úštěk. In The preferential maps it is also evident, that pupils during the space evaluation, focus on individual space. All findings gained during the research, are reflected in the methodical list.

The result of the theoretical part of this project is the proposal of the framework methodology consisting of conception, construction, implementation and operation stages. These stages are then described in further detail and supplemented with important questions that should be solved by a designer in particular phase of the project. The theoretical part is followed by the practical part in which the discovered facts are verified during the creation of geoinformatic system of faculty realized using interactive plans. Gradually, a test version of the application was formed and then tested by questionnaire survey by students and employees of the faculty. Based on user´s requirements final version of the interactive plan has been created so that it could be later put into common operation. The secondary aim of this work is the indication of the possibility of using 3D modeling in the creation of interactive plans and comparison of this procedure with the traditional two-dimensional one. The output of this section is a 3D model of the building of Dean´s Office of The Faculty of Science UK, available on the web.

Comparison of automatic and manual classification on the example of chosen anthropogenic surfaces / Miroslav Hora / Diploma Thesis / 2012 / Complete Thesis
Abstract:: The thesis is focused on a semi-automatic classification based on the software eCognition Developer. This software should facilitate the creation of maps. A person does not perform vectorization and interpretation of each object in orthorectified image from remote sensing, but for the classes of given objects creates classification base. The classification is based on these bases. The main goal of this thesis was to create a classification bases for a class of red roofs, asphalt roads and water tanks (or ponds) on satellite images QuickBird, Ikonos and Orthophoto CR. The LiDAR data analysis showed the importance of edge detection for segmentation, but the data itself will be available until 2015. The LiDAR data therefore been replaced by the Canny edge detector. The used methods were the image enhacement (Pansharpening, Principal Component Analysis - PCA, Canny edge detector), multiresolution segmentation, fuzzy classification, CART analysis (Classification and Regression Trees) and assess the accuracy of classification (Kappa coefficient). The proposed classification bases showed high accuracy in comparation with manual classification of the given classes, but only if they have been properly defined spectral features marked by CART method.
